Whidbey and Camano Islands
| With more than 700
wineries throughout Washington State, how do you decide
which ones to visit next? One way is to think in
clusters... or wine trails... or loops; plan to relax for a
couple of days in a specific area... visit wineries, enjoy the
vineyards and the views. Take a little time to get the
feel of an area and its wine-producing culture.
Island
County is one of those areas, and it has seen considerable activity in the winemaking
arena as of late. Specifically, the southern portion of Whidbey
Island is s great place to explore since it is home to most
of the county's wineries. About 10 boutique wineries
(read small producers) are clustered
around Greenbank, Freeland and the Langley area,
many using Puget Sound fruit from their own property. Off-Island distribution is rare so be sure
to take home the wines you enjoy; no doubt your
friends will be planning their own Island County getaways
bring home wines of their own.
There are plenty of awe-inspiring views
of the Sound from a growing number of wine-enthusiast
services, so choose your lodging and dining spots to treat
your senses. There is no direct access to Camano
Island from Whidbey Island, but two wineries are easy to
reach off the I-5 corridor, and Camano has the lure of an
arts community to add to its attraction. |
