Washington's Spokane Area
...and its wineries

Spokane takes its name from the Native American tribe that makes its home in the area.  In English, the name translates as "Children of the Sun."  The Spokane River, a major tributary of the Columbia River, passes through the city of Spokane, tumbling through a series of dramatic falls in the heart of Downtown.  One of the most spectacular falls can be found at the western end of Riverfront Park, a 100-acre urban park located on the site of the Expo '74 World's Fair.

Fortunately for the wine enthusiast, a number of wineries have tasting rooms in the downtown area of Spokane making it possible to spend the entire day tasting wine without leaving the city.  Within just a few miles of downtown, several other wineries offer breathtaking views and awe-inspiring wines.

Spokane and the area surrounding it have a continental, semi-arid climate, with moderately cold winters and warm summers. The Cascade Mountains to the west shield it from any direct modifying effect of Pacific Ocean air, and Idaho's Mountains to the east help protect it from the worst effects of arctic air in winter.  Even so, grape growing is all but absent in the region.  Wineries use grapes grown and purchased from regions in Eastern Washington AVAs and Southern Idaho's Snake River Valley AVA.

The city itself is Washington's second-largest in the heart of the Inland Northwest, and it sits at the east edge of the Columbia Plateau's wheat farms and steppe where they meet the forested foothills of the Rocky Mountain... the Selkirk Mountains.  The jewel of the City is its extensive park system, great places to take a break or enjoy a picnic while you are in town.  It was Spokane's board of park commissioners that had the foresight -- in 1907(!) -- to hire professionals to draw up a plan for Spokane parks.  Today, Spokane has a system of 75 parks totaling 3,500 acres; parks within this system range in size from the quarter-acre Skeet-So-Mish Park playground to the 464-acre Palisades Park conservation area.
