Idaho Wine Country
Snake River
AVA - its Wineries,
Wine Country, Wine &
Wine
Shops
On its way
to the Columbia River and beyond to the Pacific Ocean, the great Snake River
of historic and geologic fame winds
its way west across southern Idaho, then sharply turns north and continues in
that direction for a few hundred miles,
marking the border
between western Idaho and eastern Oregon.
Like so many other great rivers of wine-growing regions around the world, the Snake creates a micro climate
that has demonstrated its suitability for grape
growing, despite its higher elevation and arid landscape.
Not only does the river provide
irrigation water for otherwise dry lands, but the air currents it creates
from its flowing water mass
help temper the extremes of winter and summer temperatures. Is it any
wonder the majority of Idaho's wineries are scattered throughout
Idaho's Snake River Valley? The long-term growing of vineyards and
growth in the number of local wineries turning those grapes into wine, is
what set the stage for what is now Idaho's first appellation, the Snake River American Viticultural
Area. (See the official map.)
Despite the variability of their respective terroir,
the Snake River Valley region
of Idaho and Eastern Oregon are strikingly similar to that of Eastern Washington:
Both regions' geological histories are influenced by volcanism and glaciations; Both experience hard winters on a somewhat regular cycle -- although both are experiencing a change in these historic cycles perhaps related to the overall effects of global warming; Both laid the foundation of their industries on white wines, particularly
Riesling; Both are located in dry agricultural areas that receive fewer than 10 inches of rain a year, facilitating vineyard canopy management by irrigation.
The primary differences between these two regions involve vineyard elevations and differing soil types brought about by variations in their geologic stories.
Thirty-four of Idaho's more than 40 wineries have located in Idaho's Snake River Valley,
with 28 choosing the valley's western end. There are now six wineries
to visit in the valley's eastern portion and two more north of Twin Falls in
Ketchum
near Sun Valley.
