Washington Wineries & Wine Regions
Puget Sound Wine Region and Seattle Area Wineries,
Wine Country, Wines and
Wine Shops
|
The Puget Sound
wine region is Washington's only
official American Viticultural Area (appellation) on the west
side of the Cascade Mountain Range. It was recognized as an AVA
(American Viticultural Area/appellation) in 1995. Only about 1% of the state's wine grapes are grown in
this region, which includes the islands and mainland adjoining the waters
of Puget Sound, extending east into the Cascade foothills. |
While more
than 50 wineries are based in the
Puget Sound appellation, only a few of them actually use locally grown grapes
to make wine. To taste the
distinct flavors of the region, be sure to visit some of these
estate wineries.
Most wineries located in the
western-most appellation of Washington's Puget Sound purchase grapes
grown in the |
 |
|
warmer, drier wine regions to the east of the Cascade Mountain range, or grow
them on their own
vineyards in those parts of the state. In fact, approximately 99% of Washington State's
wine grapes are grown in the eastern appellations of the Columbia,
Yakima, Red
Mountain, Walla Walla valleys, the Columbia Gorge
and Wahluke Slope (Washington's newest AVA). Other successful
growing areas of the Columbia Basin are not yet authorized as AVAs.
Wines produced
by most Puget-Sound-based wineries reflect the character of
Washington's eastern wine regions where a wider variety of grapes can be
grown. "Eastside" grape harvests often are shipped to
"Westside" facilities for processing, bottling and
distribution. A few Puget Sound-area wineries own and operate production facilities in
central Washington, with tasting
rooms and corporate offices established along the I-5 corridor of the more populated Puget Sound region.
When you visit wineries in the Puget Sound
area,
be sure to make time to enjoy the flavors and
characteristics of the region's terroir (combined
influences of soil, climate, sun exposure and air drainage) by visiting a few of the
wineries offering estate-grown
wines. Watch for cool-climate, locally grown varieties
such as Pinot noir, Madeleine Angevine, Siegerrebe and Chasselas.
These varieties thrive in the lush Puget Sound wine region, just as
they do in the similar climate of the Loire Valley in France.
The
more adaptable Pinot gris grape is grown in both temperate Puget Sound
vineyards and in a few of the more arid and warmer vineyards of central and eastern
Washington. The climatic differences are significant, resulting in
Pinot gris wines of distinctly different flavors and bouquets,
depending on the region of their origin.
While
known as a cool-climate viticultural region, the Puget Sound
Appellation features summer
growing seasons as long as they are mild. Rain shadows of the Olympic Mountains
to its west create attractive micro climates for growing vinifera
grape varieties. Annual rainfall in these areas can be as low as
17 inches per year, compared with 60 inches or more in other areas of
Western Washington. Long
periods of freezing temperatures are rare in the Puget Sound basin.
The Sound's large body of water moderates temperature extremes, making
possible not only viticulture, but fruit growing as well.
Fruit-wine aficionados will find no lack of delicious choices.

Wine Touring
in the Puget
Sound Wine Region
Seattle Area Woodinville
Greater
Puget Sound Area
Wines
Northwest organizes wine-touring information for the Puget Sound
wine region into three sections
-- the Greater
Puget Sound Area, the Seattle Area
and the Woodinville Area. You can find wines from the
wineries of this region at many nearby Seattle-area wine
shops and other Puget Sound-area
wine shops as well.
Greater Puget Sound Area
Wineries, Wine Country and Wines |
|
Wineries
scattered throughout the popular and beautiful Puget Sound Region give
wine-country travelers an opportunity to combine wine tasting
with an awe-inspiring variety of site-seeing and recreational
activities. Famed for their array of beautiful vacation areas,
Northwest Washington's Olympic Peninsula and Puget Sound islands
are home to 26 wineries.
Only nine
of these wineries, however, produce estate-grown wines. |
Island
hopping by ferry is a great way to visit any of the six picturesque wineries
on the islands. As you can see from our Puget
Sound Wineries Map, even staying on the I-5 corridor
puts you in close proximity to six wineries near the freeway.
If you are in a real rush, consider stopping at one of the many
local wine shops where local wines are sold.
