Pontin Del Roza... It's a Family Affair

For more than 200 years, the Pontin family has been growing grapes and making wine in Italy, in France, and in the Yakima Valley of Washington.  Now that's a family affair!

Combine this wine-growing tradition with a pioneering spirit and you have a thumbnail account of the Yakima Valley branch of the Pontin family that immigrated to Washington more than 65 years ago.  They came to establish their own family farm in the new world... the Pontin Farm, precursor of Pontin Del Roza Winery, located in the wine-hub of Prosser, Washington.

It was Angelo Pontin who first came to Prosser, planting terraced vineyards as his family had done for generations in Italy.  Son Nesto and his wife Delores expanded the farm in the mid-50s on "the Roza," an area of south-facing slopes along the north side of the Yakima Valley, irrigated by one of the Valley canals known by the same name.

Initially, the primary crops were corn, potatoes, sugar beets, mint, alfalfa and wheat.  Now they are wine grapes, concord grapes and apples.  It was the couple's son Scott Pontin who rekindled the family's ancestral passion for winemaking in the 1980s when he convinced the family to expand their farming efforts to include wine grapes.

Since then, vineyard plantings have been carefully selected to include grape varieties matched to the microclimate and deep soil of the Roza.  The Pontin family followed the basic principle handed down by generations of their European winegrowing ancestors... to insure the best fruit and the best wines, plant only those varietals that will reach maturity by the end of your growing season.  Fully ripe grapes are the foundation of the premium wines made by Pontin Del Roza winemaker Scott Pontin..

Showing business acumen and ambition at an early age, it was Scott in 1984 who started the winery... as a Future Farmers of America project!  With only four wineries in the area at the time, some may have chuckled at young Pontin's project... especially in light of his underage status.  With Pontin Del Roza operating continuously since 1984, and Scott as its winemaker, it is clear this FFA project was an undeniable success.

Today, the total number of wineries operating in the Prosser area of the Yakima Valley is 28, including Pontin Del Roza, which now produces approximately 4,000 cases of wine a year.

To taste the generations-old legacy of the Pontin family's French and Italian winemaking, come by Pontin del Roza Winery on your next area visit.  The hospitality of the family is always on tap in the tasting room; Scott's mother Delores, his sisters Colleen or Diane, occasionally his brother Larry and sometimes Scott himself are behind the bar, ready to tell you all about their wines.

The Wines of Pontin Del Roza

All Pontin Del Roza's wines (except its Chenin Blanc grown in a neighboring vineyard) are made with grapes from the winery's 145-acre estate vineyard on the Pontin family farm.  Traditional and modern winemaking methods, from the old and the new world, produce classic European wine character in Pontin Del Roza wines.

2006 Chenin Blanc
SOLD OUT
New Release Available Spring 2008

An award winner since its introduction in 1984. Grapes are sourced from a neighbor's vineyard, also located on the Roza.  A good acid balance and flavors of grapefruit and peach make this an excellent sipping wine.  100% stainless steel processing. 2% residual sugar.

2006 Estate Pinot Grigio
Silver Medal -
Central WA State Fair Wine Competition June 2, 2007

Pontin's Pinot Gris grapes were planted in 1999.  Honoring their family heritage, the wine is made in the traditional Italian style.  The use of stainless steel insures a fruit-forward wine, a perfect companion for shellfish, fish or as a picnic wine.

2006 Estate Riesling
Silver Medal -
Central WA State Fair Wine Competition June 2, 2007

Pontin's Riesling grapes were planted in 1999.  Processed in stainless steel, the fruit character of the Riesling grape comes through naturally, along with lots of melon.  With about 4% residual sugar, the wine is a great companion for cheese and grapes or a wide variety of hors d'oeuvres.

2002 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
SOLD OUT
New Release Available Spring 2008

A limited-bottling award winner for our winery, made only during exceptional growing years.  Planted in 1987, these mature vines are harvested, crushed and aged six months in French oak barrels.  The 2002 vintage was a warm growing year, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, and the resulting wine will mellow over a generous number of years to come.

2004 Estate Merlot

Planted in 1987 on the Pontin family farm.  Mature grapes produced the characteristic black cherry flavors of the varietal.  Aged five months in French oak barrels.

2005 Estate Sangiovese
Silver Medal -
Central WA State Fair Wine Competition June 2, 2007
SOLD OUT
New Release Available Spring 2008

One hundred percent Sangiovese grapes from Pontin's estate vineyard are processed in stainless steel.  The fruit-forward result carries a hint of black pepper.  A lighter-style red wine.
