Winter Touring in Pacific Northwest Wine Country
Page Three - Continued from page two

In Washington?

Curious about which Washington wineries you can visit during the off season?  Whether you’re exploring the greater Puget Sound region or the rolling hills and ridges of Eastern Washington, you'll find plenty of wineries ready to welcome you.

  The Puget Sound

If you plan a visit to wineries of the Greater Puget Sound area, you'll find no lack of wine-tasting opportunities.  In fact, it would take several days to visit them all.  Winery tasting rooms are located in the city, in nearby Woodinville, on several islands in the Sound, and on the Olympic Peninsula.

There are many fine dining and lodging opportunities in each of these areas;  if you plan to stay a while, check our Puget Sound and Seattle-area suggestions.

Consider staying in the exciting downtown Seattle -- The Emerald City -- as a home base;  the Hotel Vintage Park is a real treat since it caters to wine enthusiasts with its rooms and its regular evening wine tastings in its Old World lounge.  The sumptuously furnished rooms at the Vintage Park all are named for wineries or vineyards of Washington State.

If you want to enjoy a little island-hopping, Seattle's ferry system makes it easy.  A half-hour ferry ride from the city takes you to Bainbridge Island where you will find Bainbridge Island Vineyards and Winery

From this island, you can drive to several more wineries, one in Hoodsport, Olympic Peninsula or Hood Canal, where more wineries offer wintertime tasting opportunities, and another ferry from Port Townsend on the Peninsula can take you to Whidbey Island where you will find Whidbey Island Vineyards and Winery

Whidbey Island is also home to Greenbank Farm, valuable to travelers as a Puget Sound wine tasting room.  Greenbank Farm allows you to taste wines from all over the region, including wines from Whidbey Island Vineyards & Winery, Olympic Cellars, Mount Baker Vineyards, Bainbridge Island Vineyards & Winery, Lopez Island Vineyards and Winery, Lost Mountain Winery, Fair Winds Winery, Camaraderie, Sorenson Cellars, Black Diamond Winery and Pasek Cellars.  Greenbank Farm also offers a private label of Greenbank Cellars Loganberry Wine, and a well-stocked gift shop with lots of regionally made products.  Also housed within Greenbank Farm is the Whidbey Pies Cafe, a popular lunch spot for locals and visitors.

From Greenbank Farm, head across the water to the Olympic Peninsula, where you’ll find a scattering of wineries within close proximity of each other.  Olympic Cellars, a few miles east of Port Angeles, makes its home in an old barn -- more than 100 years old -- resting in the shadow of snow-covered Mt. Olympus.  The rural charm will delight you.  A fabulous gift shop is included in the tasting room; offerings are decidedly slanted to the female wine enthusiast at this women-owned and operated winery.  While you’re in the area, the winery recommends eating at Bella Italia in Port Angeles, a restaurant, wine bar and wine shop rolled into one.

Seattle and Woodinville

The historic Pike Place Market contains a gem for off-season wine tasting; The Tasting Room located on an angular street within the Market is the cooperative tasting bar for six Washington wineries.  Participating wineries are winemaker owned and have very limited production.  Currently featured are the wines of Apex Cellars, Camaraderie Cellars, Harlequin Wine Cellars, JM Cellars, Latitude 46 N, Wilridge Winery, and Wineglass Cellars.

For your next stop along your winter wine country tour, drive east from Seattle to Woodinville.  The grand lodging facility of Willows Lodge is conveniently situated between two of Washington’s  oldest and most popular wineries – Chateau Ste. Michelle and Columbia Winery.  This Northwest-style lodge, situated on five acres adjacent to the Sammamish River, was created for the wine lover.  It boasts several wine-theme rooms and offers special winter packages sure to make your stay unforgettable.  Willows Lodge is also home to both the Barking Frog and The Herbfarm restaurant.  Each dining facility features Washington wines, along with unique dishes made from fresh Northwest ingredients.

From the Lodge, you can easily walk to both neighboring wineries.  Start with Chateau Ste. Michelle, open everyday from 10 am until 5 pm.  Lovely grounds, complete with wandering peacocks, greet you as you make your way into the winery to visit the tasting room and take a tour.  You’ll love the ambience and the history of this one-of-a-kind winery.

From there, walk across the street to Columbia Winery, where master winemaker David Lake makes one of the finest Syrahs in the Pacific Northwest.  The winery, open daily from 10 am-7 pm, offers tours by appointment and features a large gift shop and the state’s largest tasting bar.  Columbia offers several wine education courses throughout the year, so be sure to check our Calendar of Wine Country Events to see if one is planned during your visit.

During your Woodinville Wine Country exploration, you will want to plan to stop by Silver Lake Winery (just down the road from Columbia Winery) to visit its spacious tasting room and gift shop, open daily 12-5 pm.  If your travels are on a weekend, be sure to stop in at nearby Facelli Winery (12 - 4) for wonderful Italian-styled wines and Di Stefano Winery (12 - 5) where wines are produced from multiple vineyards with the preference of blending the terroirs vs. single-vineyard designated wines.

While these Woodinville-area wineries make their homes in the Puget Sound region, all their wines are made from grapes grown on the east side of the Cascade mountains in Eastern Washington, the heart of Washington Wine country  -- the Yakima Valley appellation, the Tri Cities-area wineries of the Columbia Valley and the Walla Walla Valley appellation.  During the winter, these regions often supply a welcome change to the winter weather of the west — sunshine and dry air.

Leavenworth, Washington

You won't need your car to sample and purchase wine from nine Washington wineries with tasting rooms on or near Leavenworth's Front Street; they are located in the heart of "The Village," and year-round tourism makes it a great destination for wine enthusiasts.  A stroll along a charming walkway, adjacent to Bavarian-styled storefronts, offers access to shops with tasting bars for Silver Lake Winery (Woodinville & Yakima Valley), Glen Fiona (Walla Walla), Kestrel Vintners (Yakima Valley), Windfall Winery (Puget Sound), Willow Crest (Yakima Valley), Pasek Cellars (Puget Sound), Icicle Ridge (near Leavenworth), Maison de Padgett Winery (Yakima Valley), and Okanogan Estate & Vineyards (Oroville in near Washington's border with Canada) inside the Gold Digger Cellars tasting room.  Three additional wine shops offer tastings and sales of an even wider selection of wines.  Lodging and dining choices are vast

Recently, the Columbia Cascade Winery Association opened its new wine tasting and sales facility just east of Leavenworth in Cashmere, WA.  "Wine Experience" features tasting and buying of wines from the wine-growing areas of North Central Washington.  It is housed in the 70,000-square-foot Apple Annie’s Antique Gallery which is also home to more than 200 antique dealers and specialty shops, restaurants, and a complete event facility.

Yakima Valley

The Yakima Valley, gateway to Eastern Washington Wine Country, is home to several wineries that join forces in fun wine events during the winter months, and maintain regular winter tour and tasting hours.  February 17 - 19 marks the date of the Yakima Valley's annual Red Wine & Chocolate event for 2007.  From 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM, the Yakima Valley Winery Association sponsors this annual event in which member wineries pair sumptuous chocolate desserts with red wines.  Each winery offers complimentary samples of delectable chocolate confections and fine-crafted red wines.

In the city of Yakima, you can't go wrong with your lodging experience if you choose A Touch of Europe Fine Dining and Bed and Breakfast.  It not only offers An historic B&B and fine dining experience at A Touch of Europe in Yakimalodging in an historic setting, but also dining experiences designated among the “most romantic in the Yakima Valley,” according to the book “Best Places to Kiss in the Northwest.”  The inn makes a great home base for your Yakima Valley winter wine touring.

Start your Yakima Valley appellation tour from the city of Yakima, driving southeast on Highway 82.  Just a short, ten-mile drive east will bring you to Sagelands Vineyard and Winery.  The winery name was inspired by the book "East of the Mountains" in which author David Guterson uses the word "sage" to describe the land of Eastern Washington, its indigenous flora and its native people.  The name of local Indian people can be translated in English to mean "sage people."  Formerly named Staton Hills Winery, the more recent owners decided Sagelands Vineyard was an ideal choice for the winery’s new name – a name honoring the land's past as well as its present.  This first landmark winery, in the northern tip of the Yakima Valley wine region, pours its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot year round, with tasting room hours of  10 am to 5 pm daily. (Note: winter hours are subject to change, so call first.)

Near the east end of the valley in Prosser, WA, don't miss a stop at the Kestrel Cellars tasting room, on the north side of highway 82, in the Prosser Wine & Food Park.  Open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm enjoy the elegant wines crafted by the talented Flint Nelson from the 145-acre estate vineyards of Kestrel, some more than 30 years old.

Thurston Wolfe opened its beautiful new winery and tasting room in the North Prosser Business Park on the south side of highway 82, a location sometimes called the Accidental Wine Village.  Wade Wolfe and Becky Yeaman will be happy to open their doors to visitors during the off season, if you call first.  Their wines are unique and delicious, and their new winery and tasting room are worth the extra effort of a call.  One thing never changes at Thurston Wolfe... the passion for making little-known wines from personally selected, exceptional vineyards of the vast Columbia and Yakima Valley regions, as well as from Horse Heaven Hills. Dr. Wade Wolfe is a veteran of both wine growing and wine making having worked for decades in the Yakima Valley and Horse Heaven Hills appellations.

The staff at Barnard Griffin in Richland, WA describes winter as a wonderful time to escape to Eastern Washington for a getaway.  Crowds are smaller and the sunshine is more than worth the drive.  Located in Richland, Barnard Griffin is open daily from 10 to 6.  The winery features both a tasting room and a gift shop.  Stop by at lunchtime and enjoy a selection of deli foods along with your wine.

Bookwalter Winery and Bistro (listed as one of three Washington "wineries to watch" in Wine Spectator) is also in the Richland area.  The wines are exceptional, and the winery, with its European-style tasting room, lounge and bistro, and its gift shop, is one you don’t want to miss.

Columbia Crest Winery is another winery well worth visiting during the winter months and is located in one of Washington's newer appellations, Horse Heaven Hills.  Outside the town of Paterson, across the Columbia River from Oregon, Columbia Crest is surrounded by an impressive 2,500 acres of estate vineyards.  The winery offers visitors a self-guided tour and tastings daily from 10 am - 4:30 pm year-round.

Its tasting room is located on among its vineyards (900 acres!!) and a beautiful deck and patio afford fantastic views. A family history of this farm is fascinating, ranging from the post-World-War-II purchase and clearing of sagebrush to its current grape-growing incarnation started in 1980.  Eighteen other Northwest wineries use McKinley Springs grapes for their wines.  Open on Friday and Saturday from noon to 6:00 pm and Sunday from 1:30 to 5:00, the owners say you should not hesitate to call and schedule a private tasting and vineyard tour at other times.

Walla Walla Valley

Walla Walla is a winter paradise for wine lovers.  Not only are skies blue more often than not, but there are world-class wineries to visit, no matter what the season!  On your way to the city of Walla Walla from the west, the roadside town of Lowden holds two claims to wine-world fame – Woodward Canyon and L’Ecole No41 wineries.

The incomparable Woodward Canyon winery invites visitors into its restored 1870’s farmhouse where its celebrated Walla Walla wines can be tasted and purchased.  Like its tasting room, the winery is open 10 am - 5 pm daily, offering tours to its visitors.  If you plan to visit, Woodward’s Darcy Fugman-Small encourages you to spend a whole weekend in Walla Walla.

“Even in the winter, it’s sunny, and the area offers beautiful vistas.”

After spending some Woodward Canyon and L'Ecole, drive a few more miles east on Highway 12 to find Three Rivers Winery — a destination winery in its own right.  On a hill overlooking the surrounding vineyards and Mill Creek, the winery (open from 10 am - 6 pm daily) is a great vantage point for taking in the nearby Blue Mountains and the historic Marcus Whitman Mission.  From delicious wines, presented in a 4,000-square foot tasting room, to a complete gift shop and a small three-hole golf course, Three Rivers makes your visit a total vacation experience.  Once you’ve tried it all, take some time to sit back by one of the stone fireplaces and simply enjoy the view.  If you’re able to visit Three Rivers Winery during the week, you might catch one of its wine education courses, offered Wednesday evenings throughout the year.
