      With 100 wineries within an hour’s drive, the Tri-Cities of Kennewick, Pasco and Richland is certainly a good choice as a home base for exploring the wine country of the Columbia Valley.  Within this large Washington appellation are the Yakima Valley, Walla Walla Valley and Red Mountain appellations as well. 

       It is easy to understand why Columbia Valley wineries produce high-end, premium wines since the Tri-Cities area lies on the same latitude as the world-famous Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of France.  The region’s dry climate combines with the Columbia Valley’s rich volcanic soil, producing hot summer days and crisp, cool evening breezes which create conditions for growing great wine grapes. The area see more than 300 days of sunshine annually and is actually a desert region, receiving less than seven inches rainfall a year.
