Washington Wineries & Wine Regions

North Central Washington's Wine Regions
... the Wineries and the Wine

If you enjoy the road less traveled — that excitement that comes with being among the early visitors to emerging communities of wineries — you'll want to spend some time in the wine country of north-central Washington's Columbia Valley and environs

Loosely clustered along the mid Columbia River in Central Washington, approximately three dozen wineries have opened their doors to visitors over the last few years - wineries within the Wenatchee Valley and around the destinations of Leavenworth and Lake Chelan.  Much of this land lies within the previously designated Columbia Valley appellation, but is distinct enough that sub-appellation status is being explored in some of these areas

Most of these wineries are scattered across the eastern flanks of the Cascade Mountain foothills in country unrivaled for its scenery and its four-season recreational opportunities.  Several have located in Washington's Ancient Lakes Area where more than a thousand acres of wine grapes grow.  This area has some of the most dramatic landforms in Washington State long ago shaped by Ice Age floods, including Frenchman Coulee, Potholes Coulee (including the Ancient Lakes themselves), and Lynch Coulee.  An application for American Viticultural Area status is under way and an Ancient Lakes AVA would consist of the western half of the Quincy Basin.

The Columbia Valley's gently undulating, open land is thought by geologists to be what's left of an ancient volcano and the influences of major, ice-age flooding.  Separated from Seattle's rainy, marine climate by the Cascade Mountains, the Valley is shielded by the rain shadow of this north/south-stretching barrier, and it experiences annual rainfall of only 6 - 8 inches.  Nearby river systems and irrigation bring vineyards the additional water needed to produce premium wine grapes.  Rivers throughout the Valley also provide some protection from climate extremes.

Navigating the North Central Washington Region

Many of the areas of north central Washington that support wineries and vineyards lie within the Columbia Valley AVA... that huge, Washington State macroThumbnail map and link to Washington's Central Columbia Valley appellation authorized in 1984.  The Yakima Valley, Walla Walla Valley, Rattlesnake Hills, Horse Heaven Hills and Wahluke Slope appellations all lie entirely within the boundaries of the Columbia Valley AVA.  The number of wineries and vineyards in and around the north-central portion of the Columbia Valley appellation has been increasing significantly over the past several years, yet efforts to identify a sub-appellation in this part of the large appellation have not yet succeeded.  Even so, the clusters of wineries and vineyards near and/or within the north-central portion of this large Washington appellation are distributed in ways that create convenient and exciting touring areas for the wine enthusiast; some of these areas currently are considering application for American Viticultural Area (AVA) status of their own.

Use our North Central Washington Wine Country map to plan wine tours convenient to nearby cities in the region.
