A one-of-a-kind place to relax and enjoy...
the Columbia Gorge Wine Country...
the home of Cathedral Ridge Winery

    A jewel in the Columbia Gorge wine region, Cathedral Ridge Winery invites you to visit them and to stay a while.  It would be hard to find a better place to enjoy a relaxed stroll through the grounds and spectacular vineyards of this Hood River, Oregon winery estate.  Sit for a while and enjoy a view of the Mt. Adams summit;  hike to the beautiful meadow above the vineyard and take in a view of Mt. Hood and the slopes of the Hood River Valley.  Or better yet, attend an event or plan your own in this hill-top meadow overlooking the vineyards and all the terrain that surrounds you.  The ambiance of meadow's lawn and its expansive views of vineyards and valleys and mountains may transform your pleasant visit to Cathedral Ridge Winery into one of your most memorable visits to any winery.

       This Hood River Valley winery sits in the middle of the Cascade Range, on the Oregon side of the Columbia Gorge appellation.  Here a stirring of marine air from the west and dry desert air from the east creates a rapid transition of ecosystems... from thick Douglas fir to scrub oak and Ponderosa pine.  This unique transitional zone makes possible the growing of a wide variety of grapes in a number of different microclimates.  Winemaker Michael Sabastiani revels in the variety of terroir available to him and the nuances they add to his production of fine Cathedral Ridge wines.

       Born and raised in the heart of wine country in California's Sonoma Valley, Michael has spent a lifetime immersed in the creation and enjoyment of wine.  A rich soup of wine-related experiences began to simmer when Michael was just 10 years old and working summers in the vineyards.  The smells of maturing grapes in the vineyard and their heady aromas at crush were important ingredients for the growing of this fourth-generation winemaker.  The inherited culture and lifestyle of his winemaking-family roots create the foundation of Michael Sabastiani's commitment to showcasing characteristics of an area's terroir and the main ingredient of his passion for blended wines.  For Michael, the locale of Cathedral Ridge Winery could not be more ideal.

       "It's like being a chef," Michael explains about his enthusiasm for creating Cathedral Ridge wines;  he thinks of each varietal and microclimate as possible ingredients for his ultimate blended wine.

       As "chef" of wine production at Cathedral Ridge, Michael creates four signature red blends:

  1. Necessity Red - a blend of pinot noir and zinfandel;

  2. Bordheauxd Red - a blend of syrah, merlot and cabernet sauvignon;

  3. Rock Star Red - a blend of cabernet sauvignon and syrah; and

  4. Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot - a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot.

         In addition to his signature red blends, Michael expresses his talent and enthusiasm through several other Northwest wines he produces for Cathedral Ridge Winery... cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, syrah, zinfandel, chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling and viognier.  The array of microclimates within the Columbia Gorge appellation gives rise to varying terroir which in turn brings additional nuanced characteristics and flavors to the alchemy of Michael Sabastiani's winemaking process.

       Come tour the agriculturally rich Hood River Valley, and be sure to take time to visit Cathedral Ridge Winery... a one-of-a-kind place to relax and enjoy the wonderful world of Oregon's Columbia Gorge wines and its notoriously spectacular scenery.

       Rain or shine, the light-drenched tasting room, light-hearted staff  and inspired wines will lift your spirits and insure a memorable experience.  Whether you come to visit on your own or to join the festivities of a scheduled event, you will find large, beautifully landscaped covered areas extending out  from the winery, and a sweeping lawn stretching beyond to vineyard's edge, creating a perfect area for outdoor activities and al fresco picnics and events.

       If you decide to stay a while, you can talk to the folks next door at Vineyard View Bed and Breakfast where special discounts are offered to winery customers and Cathedral Ridge Wine Club members.

Cathedral's Famous Syrah, Cab, Merlot blend is back!  56% Syrah, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot makes this beautiful blend. The Bordheauxd (pronounced Board Head) is our tribute to the hard working Board Heads shredding the Columbia Gorge. Hints of blackberry, chocolate & tobacco tantalize your nose and your palate is rewarded with the taste of bittersweet chocolate swirled with blackberry followed by a smoky finish. Strong tannins will help this wine age nicely.  Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and patiently blended, this wine features complexities of each grape, our unique Columbia Gorge climate, and the multi-faceted nature of our community.

Dark berries, milk chocolate, and cassis on the nose followed by a smooth, balanced mouthfeel & soft tannins on the finish make this a very approachable red wine.  Of the many Bordeaux-style wines we produce, our Cabernet/Merlot blend is the most approachable.  The intent of our "Cab/Merlot" is to broaden our flavor spectrum of full-bodied red wines. This wine takes the softest qualities of the two varietals and blends them together to produce a young and appealing wine that retains some of the tannin from its parent wines.  Our Cabernet/Merlot presents a more youthful approach to a red wine. The Merlot component adds bright fruit qualities, while the Cabernet tops it with richer fruit and "bursts" of tannin. The resulting blend is an exquisite array of full textures with wonderful fruit highlights.  We age our Cab/Merlot for up to 11 months in oak barrels, and bottle the final blend as young-drinking red wine. Even though its heritage lends to a full bottle aging potential, it is a wonderful wine while served young and pleases most red wine admirers
