Grapes of uncommon quality...
Wines of depth, nuance and balance

Legend has it that the Canoe Ridge was named by explorers Lewis and Clark on their historic journey which brought them through Eastern Washington and down the Columbia River. According to folklore, the two adventurers thought the giant ridge overlooking the river looked like an overturned canoe.

In 1989, a group of Washington farmers with a keen interest in quality wine had begun to plant on the as yet untouched land.  A year later, a partnership with the Chalone Wine Group was formed and additional plantings were finished.

The site was selected because of its distinctive micro-climate, ideal for growing Merlot, Cabernet and Chardonnay.  Its proximity to the Columbia River, warm spring temperatures, and cool nights throughout the growing season provide perfect conditions for maturity and balance.

Once the vineyard came into production, the winery was established beneath the charred beams of the historic Walla Walla Engine House and is home to all production and visitor activities of Canoe Ridge Vineyard.

(Continue top of column 2)

Merlot wines comprise about two thirds of Canoe Ridge's production, since it appeals to a wide range of people and pairs with a wide variety of foods. The Canoe Ridge Vineyard is also perfect for the heat-loving varietal Cabernet Sauvignon.

While Canoe Ridge focuses on red wines, they do make a limited quantity of white wines. Chardonnay was the winery's first white varietal, and it is produced in a style that allows the varietal to show through. The influence of oak barrels and malolactic fermentation is applied very judiciously. Gewürztraminer was produced in 1996.

Winemaking philosophy at Canoe Ridge begins in the vineyard, where the level and quality of ripeness become the foundation of every new vintage.  Each winemaking effort aims at honoring the uniqueness of the Canoe Ridge vineyard site, reflecting its individuality through the depth, nuance, concentration and balance of Canoe Ridge wines.

Gold Medal - 2006 L.A. County Fair Wines of the World Competition
Silver Medal -
2006 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

This wine was fermented in small lots, allowing each to be treated as a unique expression of the vineyard. By using a variety of fermentation practices, yeast strains and barrel coopers, individual components were created that were carefully pieced together for the final blend, 75% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. A minimum of fining and filtration was used and the wine was aged in 85% French oak barrels for 20 months.  The resulting wine has elegant, classic flavors of rich, velvety Canby raspberry, Bing and black cherry and Belgian chocolate.

2003 Merlot Reserve
Columbia Valley

$45.00  order now

We fermented the fruit for the 2003 Merlot Reserve in many small lots, treating each one as a unique expression of the vineyard. The individual components were then carefully pieced together for the final blend. After minimal fining and filtration, we aged the wine for 20 months in 100% French oak barrels.

This Merlot Reserve is a powerfully flavored wine, with an intense expression of spicy and fruity aromas, “pain d’épice” (spiced bread), cinnamon, and blackberries. In the mouth the wine is round and chewy, with a full mid-palate. It is ready to drink now, but also has the potential for aging. Enjoy it with steaks, rich pastas, and lamb stew.  94% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon.

2003 Cabernet Sauvignon
Canoe Ridge Vineyard

Our 2003 Canoe Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented in many small lots, which allowed us to treat each one as a unique expression of the vineyard. By using a variety of fermentation practices and yeast strains, we created individual components that we carefully pieced together for the final blend. We used a minimum of fining and filtration, and we aged the wine for 20 months in a variety of oak barrels.

The finished wine is intense in color and tone, with spicy aromas of licorice root and cinnamon, hints of plum jam and an elegant touch of minerality. In the mouth it is very round and chewy, with a powerful yet elegant structure, suggesting a great potential for aging. This young wine is enjoyable now with rich, savory fare.  100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

2004 Red Table Wine
Columbia Valley
$15.00
order now

The 2004 Red Table Wine continues to be a great, affordable "every day" kind of wine. Composed of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Merlot fruit offers typical rich, velvety flavors of Canby raspberry, Bing and black cherry and Belgian chocolate, while the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit provides a bit of structure and flavors of berry and plum fruit with touches of spice and cedar. Following fermentation in 100% stainless steel, the wine was aged in predominantly French oak barrels.

The 2004 Red Table Wine offers fruity aromas of strawberry, cherry, dried fig, and clove with a hint of vanilla and licorice. The soft tannins and fruity aromas make this a very approachable and versatile wine. Enjoy it with grilled lamb chops, beef stews, and hearty pastas.

White Wines

2004 Gewürztraminer
Oak Ridge Vineyard, Columbia Valley
$12.50  order now

The 2004 Canoe Ridge Vineyard Gewürztraminer displays all of the rich spicy, honeysuckle aromas we have come to expect from the wines of this vineyard. Delicious melon, lychee, nectarine and spice flavors match the mouth-coating feel that results from barrel fermentation in older, neutral French oak barrels. Our 2004 Gewürztraminer finishes on the palate with a pleasant crispness.

2003 Late-harvest Gewürztraminer
Oak Ridge Vineyard, Columbia Gorge
$14.00 375ml bottle
order now

This is the first vintage for which just the right conditions were present to craft a late-harvest Gewürztraminer. Wine critics have called the 2003 vintage in Washington one of the best in recent history.  We make this dessert wine in the ice-wine style, except we pick the grapes at "normal" sugar levels. The grapes are quickly frozen to 0°F, removing much of the water while preserving the natural sugar and acid. The grapes are then pressed while still frozen. This technique allows us to pick while natural acidity is relatively high and to precisely dial in the desired sugar level. To capture as much of the fruit character as possible, the juice is fermented very slowly at very low temperatures.

This wine has wonderful flavors of honeysuckle and rose petals, Chinese 5-spice, overripe mango, vanilla, perfume and apricot nectar.  The residual sugar is balanced with lively acidity, making it an easy match with a variety of cheeses, fresh fruits and light desserts. Or, it's a wonderful dessert served by itself after dinner.

2004 Chardonnay
Canoe Ridge Vineyard
$19.00

Our 2004 Chardonnay emphasizes the fruit character in balance with 100% French oak. A portion of the blend was barrel fermented with full malolactic fermentation, while the other portion was stainless fermented with no malolactic fermentation. This resulted in a wine with wonderful round tropical fruit notes like peach, melon and mango, accented by some caramel and toasted coconut aromas from the barrels. The mouthfeel is crisp and clean.

2003 Muscat
Columbia Valley
$14.00 375ml bottle

Canoe Ridge makes this dessert wine in the ice wine style except the Gewürztraminer grapes were picked at "normal" sugar levels for a table wine. The grapes were then quickly frozen to 0°F, which removes much of the water while preserving the grapes' natural sugar and acid. The grapes are then pressed, while still frozen. This unusual technique allows us to pick early, while natural acidity is relatively high, and we can precisely dial in the desired sugar level of the juice to be fermented. To capture as much of the fruit characteristics as possible, the racked and clarified juice was fermented at very low temperatures and aged in stainless steel tanks. This is an elegant way to produce a very particular style of wine with many of the hallmarks of late-harvest wine, except that freshness and vibrancy are maintained. With one sniff, the traditional Canoe Ridge Vineyard Gewurztraminer aromas of spice and honeysuckle melon immediately entice you. The round, lush mouthfeel displays concentrated flavors of lovely honey-apricot flavors with a rich, lingering finish.  The residual sugar is balanced with lively acidity, making it an easy match with a variety of cheeses, fresh fruits and light desserts. Or, it's a wonderful dessert served by itself after dinner.  100% Muscat.  Ageability: 20 years
