It's a Family Affair

No question about it.  With a 30-year history and five generations of Henry family members involved with establishing and operating the Henry Estate Winery, no one would question the family's commitment to producing fine, hand-crafted wines from the grapes of the Umpqua Valley appellation.

Vineyards surrounding the winery currently produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau and White Riesling.  "Great wine is grown in the vineyard," the Henry family believes.  That's why 95% of all grapes used at the winery are Estate grown, insuring complete control through constant oversight.

From its meager beginnings in 1978, Henry Estate produced only 2,000 gallons of wine;  in 2000, the winery expanded its production from 6,000 to 18,000 cases to meet the growing public demand for the wines of Henry Estate.  The winery distributes to more than 25 states and five countries in Europe and Asia.

Always striving for perfection, family patriarch Scott Henry III developed a unique trellising system that optimizes the maturity of grapes for production of world-class wines.  The Scott Henry Vertical Trellis System is used exclusively in Henry Estate vineyards, and it is now used throughout many of the world’s finest wine growing regions including Australia, New Zealand, South America and North America.

Henry Estate Winery releases its wines one to two years later than most wineries, since achieving proper balance and complexity is a high priority.   It also tries to hold back enough wine from each vintage to give consumers the opportunity to compare vintage differentiation.

Henry Estate has earned the respect of other Oregon wine industry pioneers, as well as a loyal following of customers and a wide variety of awards and praise from wine tastings and festivals worldwide.  It is one of Oregon's oldest and most prestigious producers of premium wines.

The entire Henry family is dedicated to maintaining and growing Henry Estate as one of Oregon’s oldest and most prestigious producers of fine wine.  The pioneering spirit of Henry has been an inspiration to many newcomers in the Oregon wine business.  That inspiration and spirit is a foundation for the entire Oregon wine industry, and will continue to build the legacy and character of Scott Henry III.

Be sure to visit this beautiful winery while in the Umpqua Region.  Bring your picnic lunch and enjoy it in the lovely Memory Garden, honoring Ella and Cal Henry.  The Henry Estate Vineyards and the garden create the best of pastoral surroundings, and the Tasting Room and Gift Shop provide plenty of pleasure for the wine enthusiast and shopper.

Henry Estate Winery hosts many events during the year including weddings, private parties, and, of course, the annual Henry Goes Wine festival.  A Memory Garden was built by family and friends in memory of Cal & Ella Henry who were instrumental in helping Scott & Sylvia get the winery started.  Click here for pricing or contact the winery for details.

Early in the harvest, decisions are made as to which style of Riesling wine the fruit is best suited for. To arrive at this decision, a multitude of factors are considered including previous forecasted specific weather patterns. If the Indian summer patterns are predicted to persist, fruit will be left on the vine and encouraged to develop the Botrytis Cinerea or “Noble Rot’, which concentrates sugars and acids and imparts exotic flavors of apricots and honey.  This wine was made from botrytis affected fruit left on the vine imparting wonderful flavors of honey and apricots. A beautiful dessert wine.

Red Wines

2004 Merlot

Individual barrels are selected through rigorous blind tastings for specific components and then blended to produce a Pinot Noir of great body and complexity. Rivaling the Winemaker’s Reserve in intensity, we feel this is a quality range we can achieve virtually every year. Aromas of cherry with earthy notes. Rich, ripe fruit with spicy nuances leads to a structured mid-palate and a long round finish . This wine will match well with sharp cheeses, beef, lamb, salmon, swordfish, duck, pate’s, spicy foods, Italian dishes and chocolate.
