North Willamette Valley

Geological Wine Tour Route

Back to Main Tour Information Page

Start Point – The Grand Hotel at Bridgeport, 7265 SW Hazel Fern Road, Tigard.  Departure time: 9:00

The roadside landscape leading to the first stop in the Ribbon Ridge AVA offers opportunities to view flood channels left in the wake of the repetitive and cataclysmic Missoula Floods that scoured the Willamette Valley thousands of years ago - floods that roared through the landscape at more than 30 miles an hour with water levels hundreds of feet deep.

First Stop – Trisaetum Winery, 18401 NE Ribbon Ridge Road, Newberg area in the Ribbon Ridge appellation.

Surrounded by vineyards, a visit to Trisaetum includes a a display of soil types specific to the winery's vineyards.  A guided, comparative wine tasting will be conducted in the winery's Gallery featuring artwork by winemaker/owner James Frey.  Inspired by the role soils play in his winemaking, James sometimes adds vineyard soils to paints he uses to add texture and interest to his artwork.

2nd Stop – Elk Cove Vineyard, 27751 NW Olson Road, Gaston area, on the
Sip 47 Wine Route.

Pat and Joe Campbell founded Elk Cove Vineyards 40 years ago and remains family-owned today.  Daughter Anna Campbell will lead a vineyard tour of Elk Cove's Roosevelt Vineyard planted to Pinot Noir in 1993.  A guided wine tasting with winemaking staff will follow.  Lunch with a view will be enjoyed in Elk Cove's special events room.

3rd Stop – Ken Wright Cellars, 120 N Pine Street, Carlton, wine town of the Yamhill-Carlton appellation.

Ken Wright considers Pinot Noir to be the preeminent wine grape on the planet.  As founder of Ken Wright Cellars in 1994, he was instrumental in organizing the six new American Viticultural Area (AVA)s in the Northern Willamette Valley.  Ken will present an AVA geology lecture and guide us through a comparative tasting of some of his vineyard-designate wines.  The focus will be on flavor characteristics brought to wines by parent rock material beneath various vineyards used by Ken Wright Cellars.

Return to Start Point – Grand Hotel – between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m.
