Columbia Winery
Washington's First Premium Winery

Columbia Winery   —Washington State’s first premium winery — was founded in 1962 by ten friends, seven of whom were University of Washington professors.  These pioneering partners were united in the belief that classic European vinifera vines could survive the harsh Washington winters.  The results far exceeded their expectations.

In 1979, David Lake joined Columbia Winery.  He became a Master of Wine in 1975, passing what is widely recognized as the world’s most rigorous professional examination in the art and science of wine.  He was the first winemaker in the United States to have earned this distinction. Having made a history of pioneering new varietals in the state, David has been described as the "Dean of Washington winemakers" by Wine Spectator magazine.

Within its Mainline Series, Columbia Winery creates distinctive white wines such as Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon and Pinot Gris.  Red wines produced for the Mainline Series include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

David Lake also offers his Signature Series of exceptional wines including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon from the Red Willow, Otis and Sagemoor vineyards, as well as Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Merlot and the first Washington-produced Syrah from Red Willow Vineyard.

As a destination point both for visitors to the Puget Sound area and for longtime residents, Columbia Winery offers guests a unique Northwest experience.  The winery hosts a multitude of special events throughout the year, including "Gorge," "SummerFest" and "Taste of Red."

Guests are invited to sample Columbia Winery’s premier wines at the largest wine-tasting bar in Washington.  A selection of Columbia’s finest wines is available exclusively at the winery.  Tours are available on weekends, while special group tours can be arranged through the winery’s retail store.

Featured Columbia Winery Wines

The Vineyards

Columbia Winery sources the grapes for its wines from five established vineyards in Eastern Washington: Red Willow, Otis, Wycoff, Sagemoor and Alder Ridge. These vineyards lie on the same latitudes as premium wine producing areas of France, yet the winery aims to produce distinctive Washington wines. Columbia Winery uses only European vinifera grapes grown in the Columbia and Yakima Valley regions of eastern Washington. The area’s long, hot, sunny days and cool, clear nights allow the vineyards to produce grapes full of complex flavors and aromas.

Signature Series

2003 Zinfandel
Alder Ridge Vineyard

Oak:  10 months in French, French-coopered American barrels

An excellent red wine vintage. The grapes were hand-harvested from a slope that is a stones throw from the Columbia River.

Tasting Note:
Medium ruby color. Black pepper spice with notes of raspberry, anise and vanilla. Substantial palate. Full and round with a meaty, spicy finish.

2003 Barbera
Alder Ridge Vineyard

Tasting Note:  Medium ruby with purple rim. Attractive aromas of cherry and red fruit, rather stiff on the palate with lively, sweet fruit backed by a touch of acidity.  Ten months in American, French barrels.

Mainline Series

2001 Cabernet Sauvignon
Columbia Valley

Vineyards: Red Willow, Sagemoor, Otis, Klipsun

A great vintage, small in size, followed a warm dry summer. Vines of great depth and concentration.

Tasting Note:
Dark, deep ruby red. Black cherry fruit with chocolate and cedar, cigar box notes. A very intriguing complex aroma which also includes spicy oak and herbed elements. Powerful full-flavored palate with velvety tannins.

2001 Merlot
Columbia Valley

Oak:  20 months in mixed barrels
Vineyards:  Red Willow, Otis

Ruby, good depth. Fine blueberry black current fruit with a note of herbs and chocolate. Smooth texture with sweet fruit and lingering texture.

Tasting Note:
This was a great vintage in Washington State. A cool summer with a light crop gave way to a superb autumn with bright sunny days and very cool nights. Harvest was late but the grapes had great balance and character.

2001 Syrah
Columbia Valley

Oak:  10 months in mixed barrels
Vineyards:  Red Willow, Sagemoor, Denhoed, Alder Ridge, Destiny Ridge

An excellent vintage with advantageous weather conditions culminating in a late, high quality harvest. All of our Syrah is hand-harvested, and there was remarkable consistency of fruit ripeness.

Tasting Note:
Deep ruby red with a bright purple edge. Black cherry and smoky dark fruitiness. Full and sweet in the mouth with a touch of vanilla and good underlying acidity and chalky, ripe tannins. Lingering finish.

2004 Cellarmaster's Reserve Riesling
Columbia Valley

Tasting Note:
Floral, honeyed aroma with hints of apricot, pear and allspice. Rich and full flavored fruit on the palate is balanced by clean, crisp acidity.  Residual sugar: 5.85%
