Few places in the historic Northwest Territory resonate with such power as does the stretch of spectacular, elevated land where Maryhill Winery & Amphitheatre overlook the Columbia River and the eastern end of the famed Columbia River Gorge, southwest of Goldendale.

Celebrating, honoring and sharing the beauty of this powerful spot is Maryhill Winery & Amphitheatre... conceived and developed by the wine-savvy members of the Leuthold family.  Together, Craig and Vickie Leuthold (with combined wine-industry experience of more than 20 years) and family members Donald Leuthold and Cliff Brooks brought their skills and passions to the shared table of  a common dream. Today, that dream is an amazing reality.

Taking in the fabulous setting, including an enhanced naturally sloping amphitheatre, the uninformed visitor might guess that Maryhill Winery was owned by some large wine company.  In reality, the The Maryhill Winery Wine Store and gift shopbusiness was started as a partnership between four individual wine enthusiasts — wine enthusiasts who just happened to be family... a family planning to make its mark as producers of superior wines.

Maryhill Winery began with a shared philosophy... that the vine is trained for vintages to come and flavors are crafted unique to each harvest past.  This time-honored approach to winemaking certainly must be enhanced by the location's setting - as rich as the wines made there.

Even the natural slope of the estate lands became a key element of the magic that is Maryhill.  Pooling their skills, passions, patience and balance, the Leuthold family used all that nature offered as they planned and developed what has become a one of the most popular destination wineries and outdoor summer-concert venues in the Northwest.  The Maryhill Amphitheater now hosts thousands of visitors a year, sharing the majesty of place and the quality of wines that is Maryhill Winery & Amphitheatre.

The Amphitheater

Dramatic views of precipitous canyon walls and sloping, open lands inspired early, famed road builders of the Columbia River Gorge, just as they inspire travelers, residents and wine producers today.  Thankfully, that includes the owners of Maryhill Winery & Amphitheatre.

The Leutholds saw the land adjacent to the east side of their winery as a perfect site for enjoying outdoor concerts.  In the summer of 2002, the Maryhill Winery Amphitheatre became a reality, providing a 4,000-seat outdoor concert venue, stair-stepped into the sloping land to create curved, grassy areas for blanket spreading, picnic dinners, and plenty of singing, dancing and swaying to the music.

The 180-degree arc of the amphitheatre and the gentle incline of the terrace deliver panoramic views of the stage and a beautiful, rugged backdrop of the Gorge walls.  Guests can bring blankets or chairs for use within the grass-terraced, general admission area. (No lounge style chairs, please.) Reserved seat tickets offer the most exclusive amphitheatre experience; more than 1,400 house-provided chairs, located near the front of the stage, offer the more exclusive amphitheatre experience.  Twelve boxed seating areas (space for eight people) were added, along with a permanent stage, in 2007, and the parking area was enlarged in response to the ever-increasing popularity of these open-air concerts.  Buffet dining on the spacious deck under the winery's arbor is also available with reservations.

The annual eclectic mix of performers scheduled for each Summer Concert Series at the Amphitheatre aims to please a wide spectrum of music lovers... even young children lucky enough to attend an outdoor concerts with moms and dads.

To maximize your Maryhill Winery Amphitheatre experience, arrive an hour or two early to select your cool block of soft green grass, unless you purchased reserved seating tickets and plan to sit in the designated area near the stage. Even then, it is a good idea to arrive early so you can leisurely browse the winery's tasting room and choose a bottle of picnic wine or a good sipping wine for your al fresco concert experience.

The Winery & Tasting Room

Imagine arriving at Maryhill Winery on a 90ºF-day for a first-time visit; you park your car, and step out into a blast of dry heat.  Dwarfed by your surroundings, a 360º expanse of raw, rugged land and the yawning gap of the Columbia Gorge that the dramatically divides the states of Washington and Oregon swamp your senses.

Maryhill Vineyard along the Columbia River Gorge

Eagerly, you head toward the inviting shade of a grapevine and flowered lattice covering the very large deck that is the Maryhill Winery entrance. You realize how hot you are and quicken your pace. Nearing the promise of shady relief, you catch your breath as an increasingly beautiful and expansive landscape — dramatic and unspoiled, beyond and below — comes into view.

Does it get any better than this, you wonder? Just then, a fine mist of water cools your flushed face, as you cross the threshold of the latticed deck.

Refreshed and stimulated, you swing open the doors of the main entrance to Maryhill's 3,000-sqr-foot tasting room and gift shop.  A visual flood of impressions compete for your attention. Framed by windows to the west, Mt. Hood dominates the view, promising peak pleasure at sunset; to your right, a darkly aged Brunswick Bar is clearly the focal point of the large room.  Stretching a full 20 feet long and 12 feet high, the bar, you learn, was made in the early 1900s, quarter-sawn from Tiger Oak, and finished with exquisite wood carvings and inset mirrors.  A number of people are enjoying tastes of several Maryhill wines being poured by friendly, informed staff.

Once you decide which wine you like most — not an easy task, you can take a glass to a fireside table and enjoy dramatic views through the adjacent glass wall.  If you want to experience fresh, dry air with your view, walk out to the trellised deck on the west side of the tasting room or to the east side with its wind-protected, grapevine-covered arbor... a platform for unprecedented views of the mountains and the Columbia River Gorge.  What a great way to end your wine-tasting day.

New Release

A jammy nose rife with cane berries and cherries, hints of black pepper, clove and chocolate. The medium finish reveals it’s truly a wine crafted for "pure palate pleasure."

2008 Winemakers Red Blend
$14.00  [Order Online]

This year’s Winemaker’s Red shows a clear, bright, ruby-red color. The aromas hearken to its predecessor with Caramel, a bit of dark berry and cherry and a hint of smoke and lilac. On the palate a medium to light acidity comes through as cranberry to compliment the caramel, coffee and bits of chocolate. Light tannins indicate this wine is ready to drink now but will cellar well for a few years

2008 Viognier
$15.00  [Order Online]

This highly popular white is the perfect wine to have around for all occasions. True to its nature the 2008 Viognier has a bouquet of honeysuckle and jasmine. Crisp fruit flavors greet your palate; green apple and crunchy pear; yet vanilla, honey and the slightest hint of oak are present as well. With a beautiful light acidity and a hint of sweetness this Viognier continues to please year after year. Pair with Thai or other spicy foods or simply enjoy this lovely sipper on its own.

Proprietor's Reserve Wines

2007 Proprietor’s Reserve Zinfandel
$36.00 [Order Online]

Our big Zin doesn’t disappoint in 2007. The well balanced experience begins with familiar notes of plums, cherry tobacco and hints of freshly ground coffee. As it opens you’ll find smoked bacon, maple syrup and campfire aromas. On the palate it’s rich and full of candied fruits, butterscotch and holiday spices.

2006 Proprietor’s Reserve Malbec
$32.00
[Order Online]

Opaque purple-colored, it emits a superb aromatic array of toasty oak, spice box, incense, mineral, black cherry, and black raspberry. Rich and opulent on the palate, this succulent, juicy effort is totally pleasure bent and capable of competing with the best Malbecs from Argentina.” ~ Jay Miller – Wine Advocate magazine – 91 Pts
