Wine Shops and Wine Bars of the Columbia Valley

    Encompassing approximately 18,000 square miles and 11 million acres, the Columbia Valley Appellation is 185 miles wide and 200 miles long, sprawling across almost half of Washington State.  Washington's first AVA, the Yakima Valley, was authorized just one year earlier than the Columbia Valley (authorized in 1984), and the latter fully encompassed the former.  Also in 1984, the Walla Walla Valley was authorized as a distinct growing region entirely within the boundaries of the Columbia Valley AVA.

        More recently the Columbia Valley was further subdivided into additional distinct regions as variations in climate and soil became clear.  Additional appellations were recognized and authorized, including Horse Heaven Hills in 2005, the Rattlesnake Hills, the Wahluke Slope in 2006, Snipes Mountain and Lake Chelan in 2009 and Naches Heights in 2011. 

       Other wineries are prospering in the north-central portion of the state all the way to the Canadian border.  Some are coalescing around a westward stretch of the Columbia River that approaches the foothills of the Cascade Mountains where it turns north again near the Wenatchee area (North Central Washington); the unique growing climate created along this stretch of river has led to the planting of numerous vineyards.

        Also within the Columbia Valley AVA is Washington's Ancient Lakes area (Central Washington).  Growers and winemakers in this area have submitted an AVA application and currently are awaiting federal approval as a new Washington State AVA, another sub appellation of the Columbia Valley AVA.

Navigating the Columbia Valley Appellation

    Wines Northwest organizes wine-touring information for Columbia Valley wineries into several sections:  the Columbia Valley Tri-Cities area and Columbia Valley North Central.  The Columbia Valley sub appellation of the Yakima Valley has been divided to three more sub appellations,  Red Mountain, Rattlesnake Hills and Snipes Mountain.  Three other Columbia Valley sub appellations - Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills and the Wahluke Slope - are organized separately, but all lie within the macro appellation of the Columbia Valley. 

Tri-Cities Area (South Columbia Valley)

     The southern portion of the Columbia Valley has a larger population than does the portion to the north. There are, therefore, enough people in the Tri-Cities area of Washington to adequately support nine area wineries and 16 more in nearby Red Mountain appellation to the west.  Ample amenities serve tourists coming to the area not only to visit the wineries, but for enjoyment of the dry climate.

      Most of the wineries clustered around the "Tri-Cities" of Pasco, Richland and Kennewick.  Only two wineries in the north Columbia Valley remain open to the public, both pleasant stops in route to the Spokane region.  Some Columbia Valley wineries have regular hours for their tasting rooms; a few conduct tastings by appointment only; some have no tasting rooms at all.  Wine country travelers can base themselves in any of the Tri-Cities and easily tour the wineries of this area.
