Dedicated to producing high-quality
wines
from Oregon & Washington... at affordable prices |
More than twenty years ago, the Fries family of Dundee,
Oregon, owned and managed 13 vineyard acres in the North Willamette
Valley. Today, they operate 865 acres in the valleys of northern Oregon and on the slopes of eastern Washington
and they produce more than 70,000 cases if Duck Pond wines every
year.
-
- "We
sometimes say our winery had to grow as large as it has, because our
family keeps getting bigger," laughs Doug Fries, co- owner and head of
the Fries family.
The growth of the Fries family
and of Duck Pond Cellars also contributed to a corresponding growth of
the Willamette Valley wine region and its recognition as a world-class
appellation. Likewise, adding vineyard acreage to the slopes of
eastern Washington testified to the desirability and distinct qualities
of this warm-climate growing area that ultimately would become
recognized as the Wahluke Slope AVA. The Fries family commitment
to planting vineyards in Washington now gives it the micro-climate
diversity to grow a wide variety of the world's best wine grapes.

Today, Duck
Pond Cellars owns and manages 540 vineyard acres on Wahluke Slope AVA in Eastern Washington's
Columbia Valley. In a dry region
east of the Cascade Range, the Desert Wind Vineyard endures a climate
that is extreme. Summer temperatures often reach 110°F and winter
days may be as cold as 14°F. With an annual rainfall of only
7"-8", the vines require irrigation during the hot summer months.
The Bordeaux varieties grown there, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Cabernet Franc, demand these fierce summer conditions.

In Oregon's Willamette Valley, near Salem,
it is the region's perpetually mild
climate that nurtures the Pinot family of grapes; the northern latitude
features long summers as well, allowing these finicky grapes to ripen
slowly. Duck Pond Cellars
owns 325 acres here - three vineyard sites where Pinot noir
and
Pinot gris are grown.
The
Duck Pond Cellars story began 1993 in the collective hands of owners Doug and Jo Ann Fries, sons
Greg and Matt, and
daughter Lisa. Together,
they created Duck Pond Cellars, and each family member is charged with specific winery tasks.

Founders Doug and Jo Ann Fries own and
manage all Duck Pond vineyards; son Greg earned his degree in
fermentation science from U.C. Davis in 1994 and served as Duck Pond's winemaker
prior to Mark Chargin's tenure; son-in-law Scott Jenkins is the sales force and works with wife
Lisa on marketing and promotions; son Matt and his wife Erin live on one
of the vineyard properties near
Salem and assist in vineyard development in Oregon.
Duck
Pond Cellars is a treat to visit, not only because
of its high-quality, value-priced wines, but
because of its impressive winery, tasting room and upscale gift shop. From May through the summer months
the winery's flowering grounds are so striking even
the casual passerby will be awed as they drive by on busy Hwy 99W.
Heads turn to
take in the colorful roadside gardens and grounds of Duck Pond
Cellars.
Stop
in and enjoy some of the winery's latest releases, its
gardens and its tasting room's expansive, well-stocked gift shop.
Bring along a picnic meal and enjoy it at an outdoor bistro table in the
winery's entrance garden. If you don't
plan to stay a while, you'll wish you had.

2008 Pinot Gris
Willamette Valley, Oregon
$12.00 per bottle
Order Now
Few
wines can match lighter fare as well as Pinot
Gris. Its crisp and juicy fruit character is
perfectly balanced. This wine comes from grapes
planted in the gently rolling hills of the
middle Willamette Valley. The soil is intensely
red and high in minerals; the vineyards are
slightly elevated in altitude, putting them in
the path of constant cooling breezes. These
factors imbue this wine with complexity and
backbone.
